Pokemon Company President, Tsunekazu Ishihara, took the stage on 6/6/2017 to introduce the world, fans, and shareholders, additional entries in the Pokemon series for the Nintendo Switch & Nintendo 3DS plus virtual console.
Personally I’m most excited for an upgrade, enhanced port of 2016’s Pokken Tournament which originally released in arcades and on the Nintendo Wii U console. The enhanced port will include additional modes (Ranked Match, Friendly Match, Group Match, 3v3 Battle Mode) and at least five new fighters, Pokemon, to battle with. I’ve noticed that the new Pokemon include the Fighters which premiered in the Arcade version, post Wii U release. Many figured Pokken Tournament (Wii U) would receive DLC for the new Arcade additions.
But that was not all, I noticed in the Youtube chat some fans were disappointed at this first announcement, expecting a Pokemon “Stars” announcement. Something of an expansion to follow up on Pokemon Sun & Pokemon Moon on the Nintendo 3DS, specifically for switch. Off topic but, do Pokemon fans overwhelmingly loath fighting games? However, fans didn’t have to wait long to get the announcement they were waiting for… Sort of… An expansion, a new entry in the Pokemon Series, for 3DS. I personally was a bit shocked that they didn’t port this game expansion to Switch. However, the upgrade games include new Pokemon and additional story elements and will launch later this year.
Lastly, Tsunekazu Ishihara announced a virtual console port of Pokemon Gold and Silver, following up last year’s re-release of the original Pokemon Red & Blue on the virtual console. This will arrive as a digital only game on the same date as Pokken Tournament DX for Nintendo Switch.
Personally, I’m excited for everything covered in this direct. However, not everyone shares my optimism… I will ask again, do most Pokemon fans hate fighting games?
