Officially announced, yesterday, at Microsoft’s E3 2017 Press Conference in Los Angeles was Namco Bandai’s Dragon Ball Fighter Z. Developed by Arc System Works, of Guilty Gear Xrd fame, is a serious 3-on-3 fighting game in the vein of Extreme Butoden or Marvel vs Capcom. I’ve already written an article discussing how potentially huge this could be and did a live reaction for my Youtube Channel, this article I will be discussing the mechanics that I’ve observed from watching the released HD gameplay footage.

As I mentioned before, this game functions similar to the Marvel vs Capcom series, by Capcom. However, to be more specific, the game looks to play more similarly to Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3. You might also make the comparison with, Skullgirls or even Extreme Butoden which was also created by Arc System Works. The player will be given the option to select characters in teams of three, the current roster and E3 version of the game will contain, see image below:

DRAGON BALL FIGHTER Z GAMEPLAY MECHANICS
Going to detail some of the mechanics I’ve observed from watching gameplay and explain how they are similar to Arc System Works other titles and how they are similar to Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3. However, keep in mind, these are just theories or ideas that I have based off gameplay that I’ve seen. I could be wrong, but I hope you find this engaging regardless. Also, this product is still in development so other things, even if correct, could differ from the final product.
Possible Character Clashes
Normals, Ki Attacks, Special Attacks, Dash Attacks
Assist Characters, Happy Birthdays
Delayed Hyper Combos, Super, Hyper, Overdrive, Level 3 Combo’s & Instant Kill Attacks
#1 – Battle Introductions!
Character’s seem to have unique entrances and dialog when entering a match. If similar to Guilty Gear Xrd, some of the characters will have unique dialog when faced with a character that have special bonds or rivalries. For example, Gohan might have some specific dialog with cell given the abuse cell put him and his friends through to force him to ascend to Super Saiyan 2. Similarly, Frieza and Goku should have specific dialog referencing their newly gained transformations from Dragon Ball Super / Revival of F.
#2 – Character Clashes? Dragon Rush? (Injustice 2, Budokai 3)
Injustice 2, by Nether Realm Studio, introduced a mechanic where characters would have dialog with one another and players entered a single button in a rock paper scissor style event which players could draw or defeat one another to inflict additional damage & slightly heal themselves to gain an advantage over their opponent. Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3, developed by DIMPS, had a mechanic where players could avoid ultimate attacks if they guess correctly or lessen the damage inflected upon them if they guess correctly. I believe the mechanic was called “Dragon Rush”. However, this could be purely cosmetic, stylized, for when characters enter the battle from the back lines.
#3 – Attack Types, Chain Combos, Specials, Launchers, Chase Mechanics / Dust Attacks, Recovery Tech
I can’t say much about this area yet. I will have to edit or write another article after my hands on impressions tomorrow, at E3 2017. However, the gameplay looks similar to UMVC3 or Xrd as the characters seem to be chaining normal attacks into specials, launchers, attacks that wall bounce, and knockback opponents. Xrd was a five button fighting game consisting of:
- Heavy Slash / Hard Slash
Dust attacks in Xrd, correct me if I’m wrong in the comments section, was similar to UMVC3’s Special/Launcher button. It could be used to knock enemies into walls or up into the air, giving players a breather or allowing them the option to chase their opponent into the air for an additional air combo/ aerial rave. Additionally, it would seem players have the ability to tech after hitting the ground, a move which allows players to rise to their feet more quickly preventing OTG combos, or to tech after being hit in the air when not in a ground/wall bounce scenario
#4 – Dragon Ball Fighter Z Assist Can Be Destroyed! Decimate the competition with a Happy Birthday!
It appears from the images below, assist are called when the assist meter is full. The assist meter appears on the assist characters avatar. When an assist is ready you will be notified with a message that says “OK”, similar to Tatsunoko vs Capcom’s “Assist OK” notification. However, you can’t spam the same assist without dealing with a proper cool down after using them. But the best part of all is the fact that you can directly attack assist while attacking the on screen enemy character. Both can be attacked at the same time dealing significant damage to both or one. In Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 a player could end a game quickly by baiting out assist and catching them in a Hyper Combo or Delayed Hyper Combo (DHC).
Vegeta Assist? This isn’t J-Stars Victory Vs, sit your punk ass down!
#5 – Delayed Hyper Combos, Super Combos, Hyper Combos, Overdrive Attacks, Level 3 Combo’s and Instant Kill Attacks
Not much is known, much of this can be inferred by general fighting game knowledge and comparisons with similar games in the genre. However, Xrd is known for Overdrives, these are called Super / Hyper Combos in other games. Overdrives are special attacks which use meter and can be thrown out or chained into by players. Dragon Ball Fighter Z is no exception. There is rumor that Instant Kill Attacks have been confirmed, this is a situation where a player has full meter or a specific in-game requirement which will grant the user a Kill attack if landed. Also it appears that assist may have delayed hyper combo potential as Gohan is seen doing a hyper right after, and during, Goku’s hyper.
Gohan and Goku are both doing Kamehameha, Goku started and Gohan followed seconds after. I’m assuming this is a delayed hyper combo (DHC)
Goku’s level 3 attack has him transforming into Super Saiyan 3 Goku for a Gigantic Warp Kamehameha. Totally reminding me of Jump Ultimate Stars!
#6- Transformations Confirmed via Super Saiyan 3 Goku, Golden Frieza (DBFZ Dragon Ball Super Content Confirmed?)
Golden Frieza is in! Apparently this is a temporary transformation, with a cool down. Watch out, when he transforms his subordinate Sorbet will try and shoot you with a ray gun! I’m wondering what other transformations could be in? I’m looking at you Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken!

I’m going to draw this to a close, all of this has been written prior to my gameplay impressions. Tomorrow I will be able to get my hands on this game and will have to write an entirely updated article. Personally, I’m excited and have already pre-ordered this game. I won’t actually let me excitement for this game kill my excitement for Marvel vs Capcom Infinite. I’ve actually pre-ordered both and am looking forward to more competition in this genre of gaming. More competition is better for consumers and forces businesses to improve!
